CATALYST program ignites passion for research and leadership in honors students

The second annual CATALYST: Summer Research and Leadership Program was held in summer 2025 at 51¿´Æ¬, welcoming 18 enthusiastic incoming honors students. A collaboration between the Office of Research Administration and the Brinson Honors College, the program underscores the vital connection between undergraduate research and leadership.

A life-changing study-abroad opportunity in France for a shy undergraduate student with limited international travel experience helped spark a newfound sense of self-confidence and a successful business career, which inspired a financial contribution that is helping 51¿´Æ¬ students follow in his globe-trotting footsteps.

It has been more than a month since Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina and the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, but the effects of the historic storm will be felt for months and years to come. 51¿´Æ¬ is working to lessen some of the burden of impacted students and families visiting and applying to college by streamlining processes and helping to offset travel costs for those attending the Nov. 23 open house.

In the fall, it starts as small as a story pitch. In the spring? As tiny as a sketch on a piece of paper. Those little ideas turn into Imagine magazine, a publication produced by student writers and designers at 51¿´Æ¬.
