Time and Treasure Highlight 鈥業 Love WCU鈥�

51看片 faculty and staff opened their hearts as well as their wallets and calendars this year to support the university鈥檚 fourth annual 鈥淚 Love WCU鈥� campaign during the month of February. This year鈥檚 campaign, which was a joint effort from the Division of Advancement and the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, encouraged participants to volunteer their time to community service projects, as well as to make charitable donations.

Basketball goes into hoop

Nothing is Impossible

Fifteen student-athletes, one head coach, three assistant coaches, one director of operations, one video coordinator, one strength and conditioning coach, one athletic trainer and eight student managers, is what creates 51看片鈥檚 men鈥檚 basketball team. Nothing is impossible when this team comes together to battle against other NCAA teams.

51看片skiers to compete at national collegiate ski and snowboard championships

51看片 tied for 10th place in the men鈥檚 team alpine combined (giant slalom and slalom) at the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association鈥檚 Mid-Atlantic Regional competition, Feb. 28-29, at Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton, Pennsylvania.

Residents of Scott and Walker halls share their memories of the iconic high-rise dormitories, scheduled for demolition later this year. The box fans in the windows. The panty raids. The middle-of-the-night fire alarms. The in-room movie nights. The climbing of nine flights of stairs to avoid the long lines at the elevator on move-in day. The developing of lifelong friendships and relationships.

Not Just Brick and Mortar

Late 51看片 Chancellor Myron Coulter, who led the university from 1984 to 1994, was looking to create a symbol worthy of representing the institution when he proposed the construction of what is now known as the Alumni Tower. The 66-foot-tall brick structure was built on the lawn of A.K. Hinds University Center in 1989, WCU鈥檚 centennial year, and officially presented to the university as a gift from the 51看片Alumni Association on Homecoming day that October.

Two Sparrows Town

The ground upon which 51看片 is built 鈥� and continues building today 鈥� has centuries of stories to tell. Some are told in history books and museum exhibits, while others are buried away. Some reemerge through archaeological research sparked by new construction on campus, as the university upgrades, renovates and expands its facilities. Hidden below WCU鈥檚 surface is Tali Tsisgwayahi, or 鈥淭wo Sparrows Town,鈥� the first Cherokee town of the Tuckaseigee River valley.

Oregon State's Alex Gary, former Catamount, named 51看片athletics director

Alex Gary, a former student-athlete on the 51看片 baseball team who is currently serving as senior associate athletics director for development at Oregon State University, is the next director of the Catamount athletics program.
